Introduction

Speaking is a normal, everyday occurrence for most of us. It usually requires very little thought, effort, or preparation. However speaking in public is the opposite — it is a disciplined skill; some say an ‘art’.

Fortunately, this formidable skill is easily learned since speaking from a stage (or simply in front of a group) is not restricted by too many technical confines — as is playing music for example.

Rather, the ‘instrument’ used by a speaker is their personality and life experiences. Therefore, a degree of self-knowledge becomes an enormous advantage.

Everything mentioned in PRESENTATION EXCELLENCE is ‘do-able’ by anyone with a desire to communicate. All of the techniques will help you to speak your ideas with confidence and conviction.

Reading this eBook will help you to speak in public without feeling pressured by audience expectations. You will be able to speak and smile at the same time; which sounds simple enough - but is actually a real achievement!
Learning to speak will boost your personal development, so congratulations on spending some quality time on improving yourself. Expect success to follow.

WHAT IS PUBLIC SPEAKING?

Why speak publicly?

There are few better ways to leverage your time and message than to speak in public. For example, religious leaders ‘spread the word’ rapidly to thousands of parishioners because of their mastery of the sermon.

Even though the Internet has gained greater coverage, nothing can inspire and connect with people in quite the same way that a powerful recitation does.

As our love of computers takes hold, our communication skills are becoming less proficient. This is even more reason why a book such as this is needed – those people with practised speaking skills will have available to them more options and impact in their daily life.

Evidence abounds. From an army commander giving orders to his troops to a teacher holding onto the attention of her students. Or an aerobics instructor motivating their class to a lawyer summing up a case – public speaking skills are on show everywhere.

But speaking in public is not just the domain of the professional business person. Parents at the school fund-raiser, students at the class assembly, residents at a council meeting – even just standing on a soapbox in a park – all these activities and more involve the successful communication.

How can public speaking skills help me?

Improving our public speaking skills is simply learning to communicate better. It does not matter what we are doing, everyone is selling something when they talk. All speaking is public speaking.
You can be the local librarian, the suburban housewife or the district soccer coach - from a quieter room, a cheaper price or a stronger team effort; we all want other people to ‘buy’ our ideas.
Most people talk all day, everyday. They use their natural public speaking ability in a one-on-one situation yet they would hesitate to speak in a group. However, there is no difference except for the numbers.
Becoming conscious of these innate skills is the first step in improving your entire communication experience.

Gaining experience

Improving your speaking skills is achieved via preparation, planning, practice, and performance. The first three are part of this book but the final part can only be realised in front of a live audience. After all, you cannot learn to swim in a classroom; you must eventually go to the pool and dive in the water.

Think of yourself like a trainee pilot tallying up flying hours before you can go solo; grab every chance you can to build up ‘time’ in front of listeners. Seek out as many opportunities as possible to speak in public.
In order to get some practice, why not volunteer to MC the staff Christmas party? What about introducing the guest speaker at the association convention? Or thanking and acknowledging them with a gift at the conclusion of their talk? It is usually enjoyable and a privilege to carry out.

From a reading in church to giving the toast at a friend’s wedding, you will always learn so much from every time you hold the microphone and speak. Like when you were learning to drive a car, do not expect to get it correct first time around. Be courageous and have faith that you will master the straightforward art of speaking to a group.

Opportunities to speak in public

  • annual general meetings (AGMs)
  • anniversaries, weddings, baptisms and birthdays
  • award nights
  • bar (boy) and but (girl) mitzvahs
  • charity fund-raisers and auctions/society balls
  • Christmas parties
  • trade shows and exhibitions
  • social club, council or association meetings
  • conventions/conferences
  • dedication of a new building
  • fashion parades
  • lunches
  • opening of a new business
  • professional development courses/workshops
  • sales/retail promotions
  • training sessions

Career enrichment

Excellent public speaking and presentation skills can skyrocket your career and create a world of opportunities.

Whether you need to create familiarity within a company, have specialised knowledge about a product, or present yourself as a person with a recognised ‘gift of the gab’ – at some time or other you will be required to publicly pass on your expertise and experience.

If you are in a leadership position already, you will be expected to speak in front of an assembled group effectively and persuasively, in a clear, concise and entertaining manner. This might even include sessions with the media — sometimes without any warning!

Getting your message across to an audience is your main goal – all you have to do is discover what your message is and then decide what tools you will use to establish this message in the minds of your spectators.
